How to Tell If Someone Hid Their Story From You (2026)

Instagram doesn’t tell you when someone hides their story from you. There’s no notification, no message, and nothing on their profile that says you’ve been left out. So if you’ve got a feeling someone is keeping you off their story list, you’re stuck doing a little detective work, which is exactly what this guide is for.

One thing to know up front: none of these checks is 100% proof on its own, because a missing story can mean several different things. Stack two or three of them together, though, and you’ll get a clear answer.

1. First, rule out a block

A hidden story and a block look very different. If you’ve actually been blocked, you can’t find the person’s profile at all — no posts, no follower count, and you’ve probably disappeared from each other’s followers. If you can still open their profile, see their posts, and you’re still following them, you haven’t been blocked. That points toward a story-hide instead, so the rest of these are worth trying. (While we’re on Instagram’s quiet side: it also won’t notify them if you screenshot their story, in case you were wondering.)

2. Check their Highlights — the quietest clue

This is the giveaway most people miss. When someone adds you to their “Hide Story From” list, Instagram also hides their Story Highlights from you — the little saved circles under their bio. So if you used to see someone’s highlights and now there’s nothing there, while you’re fairly sure they still have them, that’s a strong sign you’ve been hidden.

It isn’t bulletproof on its own — they could have simply deleted their highlights — but paired with the other checks, it’s telling.

3. Look from a second account

If the account is public, open their profile from a different Instagram account — a spare one, or one you set up just for this. If a story ring or highlights show up there but not on your main account, you’ve been hidden. This won’t work for private accounts, since the second account would have to follow them first.

4. Ask a mutual friend

This is the most reliable check, and the only one that works on private accounts. Ask someone who also follows the person whether they can see the story or highlights that you can’t. If it shows up for them and not for you, that settles it. Just pick someone you trust not to make it awkward.

5. Watch for stories you’re clearly being left out of

Sometimes the evidence comes to you. You spot the person tagged in a friend’s story, a mutual reshares something they just posted, or they ask “did you see my story?” — but their profile never shows a ring for you. When other people are obviously seeing stories you never do, hiding is the likely reason. (If you can still see someone’s stories and just want to keep one before it disappears, you can download the story instead of screenshotting it.)

Don’t confuse it with Close Friends

There’s an innocent explanation that looks almost identical: Close Friends. If someone posts a story only to their Close Friends list and you’re not on it, you won’t see it — same as being hidden. The tell is the color: Close Friends stories show a green ring to the people who can see them. So if a mutual tells you the story they saw had a green ring, you weren’t hidden — you’re just not on the Close Friends list, which is a different and usually far less personal thing.

Reasons you might not see a story even if you’re NOT hidden

Before assuming the worst, run through the boring explanations:

  • They haven’t posted a story, or the one they posted is already more than 24 hours old.
  • They shared it with Close Friends only.
  • Their account is deactivated or temporarily disabled.
  • You muted their stories yourself at some point — you can still see them by visiting their profile directly.

Skip the “see hidden stories” apps

You’ll find apps and websites promising to reveal stories that have been hidden from you, or to show you someone’s story anonymously. Avoid them. Instagram doesn’t share that information with anyone, so these tools can’t actually do what they claim — and the ones that ask you to log in are just after your password. It’s not worth risking your account over a story.

How to hide your own story from someone

If you landed here because you want to do the hiding: open your profile, tap the menu (☰) in the top corner, go to Settings and privacy, and find the Story (or “Story and live”) section. Tap Hide story and live from and select the accounts you want to leave out. They won’t be told, and they’ll stop seeing both your stories and your highlights — exactly the situation described above.

FAQ

Does Instagram notify you if someone hides their story from you?

No. There’s no notification and no indicator anywhere in the app. The only way to know is to check using the methods above.

If I can’t see someone’s story, does that mean they hid me?

Not necessarily. They might not have a story up, it could be older than 24 hours, they may have posted to Close Friends only, you might have muted them, or you could be blocked. Check the other signs before deciding.

Does hiding a story also hide highlights?

Yes. Anyone you hide your story from also stops seeing your Story Highlights, which is why missing highlights is one of the better clues.

Can an app show me stories that were hidden from me?

No. Instagram doesn’t make that data available, so any app claiming to do it is either lying or trying to steal your login. Don’t use them.

Is being hidden from a story the same as being blocked?

No. If you’re blocked, you can’t see the person’s profile or posts at all. If you’re only hidden from their story, you can still see everything else — just not their stories and highlights.

One last thing. People hide stories for all kinds of low-stakes reasons — a surprise they’re planning, a vent about work, something meant for a smaller circle. It’s not always about you. If it genuinely bothers you and it’s someone you’re close to, the quickest way to know is the one nobody likes hearing: just ask them.
