What you actually get

A Reel comes back as a single MP4 — H.264 video with AAC audio, the same file Instagram streams to the app. It is passed through untouched, so there is no second round of compression and nothing is stamped onto the frame. If you have seen downloaders that burn a logo into the corner, that is not what happens here.

Reels are shot and stored vertically at a 9:16 aspect ratio, which in practice means 1080×1920 for anything uploaded at full quality. That shape matters if you plan to reuse the file: a Reel dropped into a landscape timeline will sit in the middle of the frame with bars either side unless you crop it. Instagram caps Reels at 90 seconds, so even a full-length one is usually 10–25 MB and finishes in a couple of seconds on any normal connection.

What you get back is whatever was actually uploaded. If a creator exported at 720p, the download is 720p — no downloader can add detail that was never in the file. Instagram also re-encodes on upload, so a Reel that looked soft in the app will look exactly as soft saved to your device.

Getting the right URL

A Reel link looks like instagram.com/reel/<code>/. In the app, tap the three dots on the Reel and choose Link or Copy link; on the web, the share icon does the same. Either one puts the URL on your clipboard ready to paste into the box above.

Two things trip people up. First, copying from the profile grid rather than from the Reel itself sometimes gives you a /p/ link instead — that still works here, it is just a feed post rather than a Reel. Second, a link copied from a Reel that was shared to your Story points at the Story, not the Reel, and will not resolve. Open the original and copy from there.

Tracking parameters after a ? in the URL are harmless — you can paste the whole thing exactly as copied.

The audio question, which is specific to Reels

This is the one thing that separates saving a Reel from saving any other Instagram video, and it catches people out. Most Reels are built on a licensed track pulled from Instagram's music library. That licence covers the track inside Instagram. It does not travel with the file.

So a Reel you download and re-upload to YouTube or TikTok can be flagged by Content ID even though it played fine on Instagram — the platform, not the file, is what changed. The audio is in the MP4 either way; the licence simply does not extend to wherever you put it next. Saving a Reel to watch offline is not affected by any of this. Reposting one is.

What this tool cannot do

Worth knowing up front, so you do not waste time trying:

• Private accounts. If the account is private, its Reels are not publicly reachable and nothing will load — even if you follow that account yourself. The request comes from our server, which is not logged in as you.
• Deleted or archived Reels. Once a Reel is removed from Instagram it is gone here too. There is no cache to fall back on.
• Audio on its own. You get the MP4. Extracting the track to MP3 is a separate job for a converter on your own machine.
• Region-blocked Reels. A small number are restricted by territory. If Instagram will not serve it to our server, it cannot be fetched.
• Stories and Highlights. Different format entirely — use the Story downloader for those.

If nothing comes back

Nine times out of ten the URL is the problem. Check that it contains /reel/ or /p/ and not /stories/, and that you copied the whole thing rather than a truncated version from a chat app that shortened it for display. A link to a profile — instagram.com/username with nothing after it — will not work either; this tool needs a specific piece of media, not an account.

If the URL is right and it still fails, the Reel is most likely private, deleted, or from an account that has since gone private. All three produce the same empty result, because from the outside they look identical.

Where the file ends up on your device

On Windows and macOS, Download saves to your browser's usual downloads folder. On Android, it lands in Downloads and appears in your gallery once the media scanner indexes it. On iPhone and iPad it works differently and this trips people up: Safari saves to the Files app, not to Photos. Open Files → Downloads, tap the file, then use the share sheet and choose "Save Video" to move it into your camera roll. If the video opens in a player tab instead of downloading, press and hold it and pick Download.

Privacy, and what saving does not give you

You do not log in, so no account of yours is involved at any point. The creator is not notified that their Reel was downloaded — Instagram exposes no such signal. The video itself is not stored on our servers; it is fetched and streamed straight to your device. Like any web server we do write ordinary access logs, which include IP addresses; the privacy policy sets out what is kept and for how long.

One thing worth stating plainly: saving a Reel does not give you the right to republish it. Whoever made it holds the copyright, and on Reels the soundtrack may be licensed on top of that. Keeping something for yourself is a different matter from reposting it, and reposting without permission can get your own account actioned.
