About instatools
Last updated: 8 August 2026
instatools is a free, browser-based set of tools for saving and working with public Instagram content. There is no app to install, no account to create, and nothing to pay for. You paste a link or type a username, and the tool returns the file or text you asked for.
This page explains what the service actually is, how it works underneath, and — just as importantly — what it does not do. If you only read one section, read the one about our relationship with Instagram.
What we build
We maintain seven tools, each aimed at one specific job rather than one tool that vaguely does everything:
- Reels downloader — for vertical 9:16 Reels, including the 90-second format and its audio-licensing quirks.
- Video downloader — for feed video, mixed aspect ratios, carousels containing several clips, and older IGTV-era posts.
- Story downloader — takes a username and returns the live Stories currently on that account.
- Profile picture (DP) downloader — takes a username and returns the full-size avatar, not the tiny in-app version.
- Bio copier — pulls a profile's bio text out as text, preserving line breaks and emoji.
- Bio styler — generates styled Unicode text for your own bio, entirely in your browser.
- Private video helper — a deliberately manual, multi-step flow for content you already have access to.
The tools are separated this way because the underlying content genuinely differs. A Story is not a Reel, and a profile picture is not a post. Merging them into one box would mean guessing what you meant, and guessing wrong is worse than asking.
How the tools actually work
When you submit a link or username, our server requests the same publicly available data your browser would receive if you visited that profile or post while logged out. It reads the media URL out of that response and hands it back to you. The file travels from Instagram's content servers to your device.
We do not keep a copy. There is no media library on our servers, no archive of what has been downloaded, and no gallery of other people's content. Your request is processed in real time and the result is not retained. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
We never ask for your Instagram password, and you should never enter it into any site that does — including ours. No tool here needs it. If a service asks for your Instagram login in order to "download faster", that is a credential-harvesting pattern, not a feature.
What we cannot do
We would rather be useful than oversell. These are real limits, not disclaimers:
- We cannot open private accounts. If an account has not accepted you as a follower, no tool here — and no honest tool anywhere — can retrieve its content. Our servers are not an approved follower and never will be.
- We cannot recover deleted content. Once a post or Story is gone from Instagram, there is nothing left to fetch.
- We cannot exceed the source quality. If Instagram stores a video at 1080p, you get 1080p. No tool can add detail that was never uploaded. Anything advertising "4K Instagram downloads" is describing something that does not exist.
- We cannot bypass region blocks or age restrictions applied by the account owner or by Instagram.
We are not affiliated with Instagram or Meta
instatools is an independent service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or in any way officially connected to Instagram, Meta Platforms, Inc., or any of their subsidiaries or affiliates.
The names Instagram and Meta, and any related marks, names, and logos, are the property of Meta Platforms, Inc. They are used on this site purely descriptively — to say plainly which platform our tools work with — and their use does not imply any endorsement or partnership.
We are also not the source of the content our tools retrieve. Copyright in any photo, video, Reel, Story, or text belongs to whoever created it.
Using downloaded content responsibly
Being able to save something is not the same as being allowed to republish it. Downloading a public post for personal reference — keeping your own content, saving a recipe, referencing something offline — is very different from reposting someone else's work as your own or using it commercially.
Our position is simple: get permission before you republish, credit the creator, and respect deletion. If someone takes their content down, that is a decision worth honouring. The formal version of these expectations is in our Terms of Service.
Languages
instatools is available in 14 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Indonesian, Turkish, Russian, French, German, Italian, Polish, Finnish, and Japanese. These are genuine translations rather than a switch that swaps a few labels. Our legal pages are maintained in English as the authoritative version.
How we pay for it
The tools are free to use and funded by advertising. That is why there is no signup wall and no paid tier. It also means you will see ads, and we would rather say so here than have you wonder. We do not sell your personal information.
Getting in touch
Questions, bug reports, corrections, and takedown requests all go to the same place: [email protected]. Our contact page explains what to include so we can act on your message quickly.
If you are a rights holder and content of yours has been retrieved through this site, please read the takedown section on the contact page. We take those requests seriously.
