Why use styled fonts in your bio?

A bio is the first thing a visitor reads before deciding to follow. Plain text blends in; a touch of styling makes a profile feel intentional and on-brand. Used well, fancy fonts draw the eye to a tagline, separate sections of a multi-line bio, and give a creator or shop a recognizable identity.

The key word is sparingly. One or two styled elements read as polished. A bio styled top to bottom in heavy glitch text is hard to read — and Instagram may strip parts of it anyway.

These are not fonts, and that explains everything

Instagram has no font picker, and nothing here installs one. What this tool does is swap each letter you type for a different Unicode character that happens to look like a styled version of it. The bold "𝗮" is not an "a" in bold — it is Mathematical Sans-Serif Bold Small A, a separate character with its own code point, originally added to Unicode so mathematicians could write equations.

That single fact explains every quirk you will run into. The text survives copying and pasting anywhere, because it is ordinary text rather than formatting that needs an app to understand it. It looks the same on someone else's phone, because their device is drawing the same characters. And it works on TikTok, X, Discord and anywhere else that accepts text, without those platforms needing to support anything.

It also explains the limitations, which are worth knowing before you commit a bio to it.

What styled text costs you

Search stops matching. To Instagram, 𝓙𝓪𝓷𝓮 and Jane are unrelated strings. If someone searches your name and you have styled it, you may simply not come back — which is a real price to pay on the one line of your profile meant to make you findable.

Screen readers struggle. A screen reader announcing Mathematical Bold characters one at a time, or skipping them entirely, turns a styled name into noise or silence. Anyone browsing with assistive technology loses that part of your bio.

Some styles will not stick. Instagram filters certain decorative ranges, particularly heavy glitch and some symbol sets. Paste one of those and it either refuses to save or arrives as empty boxes. If a style disappears when you hit Save, that is why — pick a cleaner one rather than trying again.

Rendering is not guaranteed. A character only shows up if the reader's device has a font covering it. Most modern phones cover the common ranges, but older devices fall back to a box. Your bio looks fine to you and broken to them, and you never find out.

None of this is an argument against using styled text. It is an argument for using it on a flourish rather than on your name, your city, or anything you want to be searchable — keep those in plain letters and let the styling carry the personality.

Getting it into your bio

Type your text in the box above, choose a style, and tap Copy. Then in Instagram: Profile → Edit profile → Bio, and paste. It is plain text, so the ordinary paste gesture works — long-press and Paste on mobile, Ctrl+V or Cmd+V on desktop.

Instagram caps bios at 150 characters, and this is where styled text has a hidden cost: some decorative characters count as more than one against that limit, so a styled bio can hit the cap sooner than the same words in plain letters. If Instagram refuses to save, that is usually the reason rather than the style being blocked.

You can also mix. There is nothing stopping you from pasting one styled line and typing the rest normally — a styled name over a plain description reads well and keeps the searchable parts searchable. Line breaks work in the bio field too, so a four-line bio stays four lines.

If a style does not save, try a simpler one first before assuming the tool is at fault. Bold and italic ranges are the most widely supported; script and glitch styles are the ones Instagram is most likely to reject.
