How to use the character counter

1. Choose a mode — Pick Caption, Bio, Username or Comment so the counter checks your text against the right Instagram character limit.

2. Type or paste your text — Type into the box, or paste in a caption you already wrote, and watch the character, word, hashtag and mention counts update as you go.

3. Watch the progress bar — The bar and count turn to a warning colour as you approach the limit for the mode you picked, so you know before you post.

4. Copy the line-break-safe version — Turn on "Keep my line breaks" and use Copy to get a version whose blank lines survive Instagram's editor when you paste it in.

Instagram character limits at a glance

Instagram usernames also have their own rules beyond the 30-character cap: letters, numbers, periods and underscores only, no two periods in a row, and no period at the very start or end. Why Instagram removes your line breaks

You write a caption with blank lines between paragraphs, paste it into Instagram, and the spacing is gone. This isn't random: Instagram's editor strips trailing spaces left at the end of a line, and it collapses any line that is completely empty into nothing. If your line breaks came from a text app that leaves a trailing space or a truly blank line, Instagram's paste behaviour erases both.

It's the same reason captions written and styled with the Instagram fonts tool can still lose their spacing on paste — the stylised characters survive, but a blank line between them doesn't, unless something is holding that line open.

How the line break fix works

"Keep my line breaks" does two things to your text before you copy it: it trims any trailing spaces sitting at the end of each line, and it places a single invisible character — a blank braille pattern, U+2800 — onto every line that would otherwise be empty. Instagram's editor sees a line with a character on it, not an empty line, so it has nothing to collapse.

One habit matters more than the tool itself: paste the result into Instagram, don't retype it. Retyping a blank line by hand just recreates an empty line, which Instagram will collapse again. Pasting keeps the invisible character in place.

Being upfront about the trade-off: each invisible character counts as one character in your total, the same as any other. If you're right up against the 2,200-character caption limit, a caption with several blank lines will use a few characters just to hold those lines open.

The first ~125 characters, before "…more"

Instagram truncates a caption in the feed and shows a "…more" link after roughly the first 125 characters, though the exact cutoff varies by device and screen width. Whatever hook, question or offer matters most belongs in that opening stretch, because a share of your audience will never tap "more" to read the rest. Type your opening line first and check the character count as you go — that's the part worth rewriting until it earns the tap.

Hashtags now: the 5-hashtag limit

Instagram cut its hashtag limit from 30 to 5 per post and Reel, a change its @creators account announced in December 2025. A lot of advice still floating around still quotes the old 30-hashtag ceiling, so if a caption you're reusing has more than 5, Caption mode will flag it.
