How to write a caption that gets read

Instagram shows only about 125 characters of a caption before cutting it off with "… more" — the exact number varies a little by device and font size, but the pattern holds: whatever you put first is what most people read, and everything after it is optional. That first line is the hook, and it carries the whole caption. A hook that asks a direct question, states the point of the post plainly, or opens mid-thought ("Nobody told me this before my first...") gives someone a reason to tap "more" instead of scrolling past.

After the hook, the body can do the actual telling: what happened, why it matters, a detail worth sharing. Keep it in short lines with blank lines between them; a wall of text is easy to skip and hard to read on a phone. Close with a call to action that asks for something specific, a comment, a save, a tag, a link in bio, rather than a generic "let me know what you think." Captions by post type

A photo caption has room to tell a small story since the image itself is the whole post; the call to action can be as simple as asking for a reaction to that one shot. A carousel caption should point at what's inside the slides, "swipe for the before and after" works because it gives someone a reason to keep going rather than stopping at slide one.

A Reel caption is read while a video is already playing, so it works better short, with the hook doing double duty as a video description and the call to action pointing at the video itself, "watch till the end" or "sound on." Hashtags in 2026: the 5-tag limit

Instagram now limits both feed posts and Reels to 5 hashtags, down from the 30 it used to allow. Some caption tools and guides online still describe 20 or 30 hashtags as normal; that advice is out of date. Turn on "Include hashtags" here and this tool sticks to the current limit and shows you the count.

With only 5 to work with, specific beats generic. A tag built around your exact niche or the post's actual subject reaches people who are searching for that subject; a broad, high-volume tag mostly competes against millions of other posts using the same one. Instagram's Adam Mosseri has said publicly that hashtags mainly help your post get found in search, not that they push a post to more people's feeds, so treat them as a search aid rather than a reach lever. Three to five well-chosen tags, mixing your niche, your subject and your location if relevant, does more than five broad ones.

Keeping your line breaks

Instagram supports line breaks in captions, but they can disappear if a caption is typed into a field, note-taking app or browser that strips them before you paste.
