Instagram's username rules, in full
An Instagram username is the handle after the @ sign, and it is different from your display name, which can contain almost anything. The username is what people type to find you, what appears in your profile URL, and what you are mentioned by in comments and tags, so Instagram keeps its format narrow on purpose.
It can be between 1 and 30 characters, made up of lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores only. No spaces, no accented letters, no symbols beyond the period and underscore. Instagram stores every username in lowercase, so even if you type capital letters while saving one, it is treated the same as the all-lowercase version and displayed that way.
Periods carry two restrictions worth knowing before you commit to a name: a username cannot start or end with one, and it cannot contain two periods next to each other. An underscore has no such restriction and can sit anywhere, including at the start or end. Beyond the format rules, Instagram also will not let you take a name that is already registered to another account, which is exactly the part this tool cannot check.
This tool additionally avoids suggesting a username made up only of digits. That is not a rule Instagram publishes; it is a practical choice, because a name with at least one letter is easier for a person to remember, say out loud, and search for.
Username and display name are easy to confuse because they sit next to each other on a profile, but they behave differently. The display name can hold spaces, emoji and almost any character, and it is what shows above your posts; it can also be changed more freely and does not need to be unique. The username is the part after the @ sign, it is what people type into search and what a mention or tag actually links to, and it is the one Instagram enforces the format rules on. When someone tags you in a comment or a caption, Instagram is matching the username, not the display name, so a clear, correctly spelled one is what keeps those tags landing on the right profile.
Rules at a glance
| Rule | What it means |

| Spaces | Not allowed; use a period or underscore where a space would go |
| All numbers | This tool avoids suggesting a username made only of digits |
Tips for choosing a good handle
- Keep it short enough to type from memory. A handle people mistype is a handle people give up finding.
- Prefer a word over a random number. If your first choice is taken, a short word attached to it carries meaning; a random number just gets forgotten.
- Say it out loud before you commit. Heavy use of underscores and digits reads fine on screen and is awkward to dictate over a phone call or read aloud in a video.
- Match it across platforms where you can. The same or a close handle on Instagram, TikTok and elsewhere makes you easier to find once, not four different times.
- Avoid anything tied to a specific year or trend. A name that dates itself needs changing again in a year or two, and changing a well-known handle costs you the links and mentions built under the old one.
- Check the spelling twice. Instagram usernames are case-insensitive and unforgiving of typos; confirm it reads the way you mean it to before saving it.
- Leave room to grow. A handle tied tightly to one narrow topic can feel wrong if your account's focus shifts later; a name built around you or your brand tends to age better than one built around a single niche term.
- Try saying it as a sentence. "Follow me at" plus your username should still make sense out loud. If it takes explaining, it is worth generating another batch.
How the style options work
Each style points the generator at a different set of prefix and suffix words, so the same name produces a different flavour of result:
- Simple stays close to your name and keyword, with light additions like "the", "im" or "official". Good default when you want a handle that reads as your actual name first.
- Aesthetic leans on soft, visual words such as "dreamy", "glow" or "bloom", suited to lifestyle, art and beauty accounts that want a softer feel.
- Professional adds business-toned words like "studio", "co" or "hq", suited to a service, shop or portfolio account that wants to read as a business from the first glance.
- Funny / Creative mixes in playful words such as "haha", "wild" or "chaos" for a looser, personal account where a bit of humour in the handle itself fits the tone.
Every style also produces a short-form version using the first letters of a multi-word name, and a version with the last letter doubled, alongside combinations built from any interest or niche word you added. None of the four is objectively better; they are different word pools applied to the same name, so switching the style and generating again is the fastest way to see a whole new set of options without retyping anything. Press Generate more to see a different mix of the same patterns within one style.
Privacy: nothing you type leaves your browser
The whole generator runs as JavaScript in your browser. Your name, your interests and the style you pick are used only to build suggestions on your own device; none of it is sent to our servers, logged, or stored anywhere. Reloading the page clears everything you typed.
The one outbound link is the Check on Instagram button, which opens instagram.com in a new browser tab so you, personally, can look up whether a name is taken. instatools has no part in that lookup and never claims to know the answer itself.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this tool tell me if a username is available on Instagram?
- No. This tool has no connection to Instagram and cannot check availability. Each suggestion has a Check on Instagram button that opens the profile URL in a new tab, so you can look it up yourself in seconds.
- Is my information sent to your servers?
- No. Every suggestion is generated in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored, so refreshing the page clears it.
- What are Instagram's rules for usernames?
- A username can be 1 to 30 characters long, using only lowercase letters, numbers, periods and underscores. It cannot start or end with a period, and it cannot contain two periods in a row.
- Can I use uppercase letters in my Instagram username?
- You can type uppercase letters when you save one, but Instagram stores and displays every username in lowercase, so "JaneDoe" and "janedoe" are treated as the same handle.
- Why does the generator combine my name with random words?
- Because a plain name is usually already taken by someone else. Adding a style-based prefix or suffix, a niche word, or a short abbreviation gives you handles that are still recognizably yours but less likely to collide with an existing account.
- Can I change my Instagram username later if I do not like it?
- Yes. Instagram lets you change your username at any time from your profile settings, as long as the new one is not already in use. Keep in mind that old links and mentions that used your previous username will no longer lead to your profile.
- Does a good username help my account get found?
- A clear, spellable username makes it easier for people who already know you to search you out and easier to say out loud, which matters more for discovery than any hidden ranking effect. It will not by itself change who sees your posts.
- Why do some generated usernames look odd or too short?
- The generator builds names from patterns (prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations and niche combinations), then removes anything that breaks Instagram's character or length rules. Press Generate more for a new batch if the first set is not a fit.
