How it works

Use it to transcribe Instagram videos as well as Reels: it works with public Reels and video posts (/reel/, /p/ and /tv/ links). Paste the link and your browser fetches the Reel, pulls out the audio and squeezes it into a small compressed clip on your own device. Only that audio clip is sent to an AI speech recognition model (Whisper), which writes down what is said. It detects the spoken language on its own and transcribes in that language. It does not translate.

  1. Copy the Reel link. In the Instagram app, open the public Reel or video post, tap Share, then Copy link.
  2. Paste it here. Paste the link into the box above and tap "Get transcript."
  3. Wait for the transcript. Your browser prepares the audio and the text appears below, in the language spoken in the Reel.
  4. Copy or download. Switch on timestamps if you want them, then copy the text or download a TXT, SRT or VTT file.

What you can use a Reel transcript for

A transcript turns a Reel into text you can search, edit and reuse. Here is where it helps most:

  • Captions and alt text. Start a caption from the words you already said, or describe a video for people who can't hear it.
  • Repurposing. Turn a Reel into a blog post, a thread or a newsletter section without retyping it.
  • Quoting. Copy an exact line instead of replaying the clip ten times.
  • Studying a script. Read how a creator opens with a hook and structures the rest.
  • Accessibility. Give viewers who are deaf, hard of hearing or watching on mute the words in text.
  • Translation. The transcript stays in the spoken language, but you can paste it into any translator.

Once you have the text, draft a caption with the Instagram caption generator and check its length with the Instagram character counter. If you want the sound or the clip itself, save it with the Instagram audio downloader or the Instagram Reels downloader.

TXT, SRT or VTT: which file to download

TXT is plain text. Use it for captions, blog drafts, notes and quotes. SRT and VTT are subtitle files: each line of speech is paired with a start and end time, so a video editor can lay the words over your footage as captions. Editors such as CapCut, Edits and Premiere can import SRT, and VTT is the format web video players use. Switch on "Show timestamps" if you want the times in the text you copy.

Limits and accuracy

Reels up to 3 minutes are supported, and only from public accounts. Private accounts, Stories and Lives can't be reached. If a Reel has only music and no speech, the tool tells you no speech was found instead of making something up. The transcript is machine generated, so accuracy depends on the audio. Clear speech with little background noise comes out best. Names, slang and loud music under the voice can cause mistakes, so read it through before you publish it. To keep the tool free for everyone, there is a limit on how many Reels one person can transcribe per hour.

Privacy

The audio is prepared inside your own browser, and only that small audio clip is sent for transcription. Your video is not uploaded by you, and we do not store the Reels or transcripts you create. instatools is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.

Copyright and fair use

A transcript is a written copy of someone's words, and those words still belong to the person who said or wrote them. Transcribing your own Reels, or a Reel for personal study, notes or accessibility, is generally fine. Quoting another creator in a post, article or video is different: give them credit, keep quotes short and ask permission before you republish a script or pass it off as your own. When in doubt, ask the creator.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Instagram Reel transcript tool free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no app to install. To keep it fair for everyone, each person can transcribe only a few Reels per hour.
Does it work on private Reels?
No. Only public Reels and video posts work, meaning anything a logged-out visitor could open and play.
How long can the Reel be?
Up to 3 minutes. Longer Reels are not supported.
Which languages does it support?
It detects the spoken language automatically and transcribes in that language. You do not need to pick one.
Does it translate the transcript?
No. You get the words in the language they were spoken. To translate, copy the text into a translator.
How accurate is the transcript?
It depends on the audio. Clear speech works best. Names, slang and background music can cause mistakes, so proofread before you use it.
Can I get subtitles as an SRT or VTT file?
Yes. Download the transcript as an SRT or VTT subtitle file and import it into an editor like CapCut, Edits or Premiere. You can also copy it or download plain TXT.
Do you store my video or transcript?
No. Your browser extracts the audio and only a small compressed audio clip is sent for transcription. We do not store Reels or transcripts.
Does it work on Stories or Lives?
No. Only Reels and video posts are supported. Stories and Lives use different formats and are not supported.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. It runs in your mobile browser, so there is nothing to install. Paste the Reel link and tap "Get transcript."
What if the Reel has no speech?
If a Reel has only music, the tool reports that no speech was found.
